The news broke on Tuesday evening that Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino had parted ways after just 11 months. It’s understood that there were irreconcilable differences between Pochettinho and the Chelsea hierarchy over strategy after talks over the last few days.

The footballing world was shocked on Tuesday night, as the news came in that Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino had parted ways after the Argentine manager had spent just 11 months at the football club. The Blues had won all of their last five games of the season, and across 2024, only Arsenal (49), Manchester City (48) and Liverpool (38) had taken more Premier League points than Chelsea (35). The decision has once again led to concerns over the board and the direction of the club's project under owner Todd Boehly. Since the American arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2022, the word calamitous probably doesn't give justice to how much of a mess Chelsea has been. Over €1 billion has been spent in two years, with little signs of progress or a clear plan in place.

This Monday May 27, the most valuable football league in the world, the Premier League, received 530 new market values, increasing its total value by €10.30 million to a new total of €11.08 billion. Seven Arsenal players, Manchester City star Phil Foden, and Chelsea's Cole Palmer were among the biggest winners in this latest update, whilst Crystal Palace increased the most in market value as a club. At the other end of the scale West Ham lost the most market value, whilst there was also 12 downgrades for Chelsea players and seven for Manchester United stars. 

The footballing world was left pretty shocked last week when Mauricio Pochettino's departure from Chelsea was announced. It came after the Blues won all of their final five Premier League games, and only the top three clubs had a better 2024 in the division. After all sorts of rumours as to who Todd Boehly and the Chelsea hierarchy would turn to as the next manager, it now looks like the club have found their new man - Leicester City's Enzo Maresca. Chelsea are reportedly ready to offer the Italian a five-year deal after being granted permission to speak to the Leicester manager, but will still need to agree compensation, which is set to be around £10 million (€11.74m) for the Foxes to release their manager. 

While Chelsea fans would certainly be forgiven for ending this season with their head in their hands, following a rather subdued Premier League campaign and head coach Mauricio Pochettino electing to depart the club, there is one shining light in the Stamford Bridge squad and its name is Cole Palmer.
